Baritone, Vocal Coach and Choral Conductor
Peter Taylor, voice, is in demand across our region for a wide variety of Oratorio and Lieder recitals.
He is also a leading vocal specialist and is sought after to direct and coach choral ensembles of varied combinations.
Peter was born in Solihull, West Midlands. He began his training with church choirs at an early age. In 2003 he achieved his Post-Graduate Diploma in singing with Adrian Clarke at the Birmingham Conservatoire. He also has a BSc in Environmental Geosciences from Sheffield University.
As a baritone soloist, Peter performs regularly in Oratorio at venues across the country, including Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. Repertoire spans from Bach and Handel, through the classical and romantic periods to contemporary works. He has also appeared in a number of operas whilst at Birmingham and for Stanley Hall Opera in Essex. Peter has a great love of Lieder and Art Song and regularly performs recitals in and around Sheffield and Birmingham.
Peter is Artistic Director and principal conductor of the University of Sheffield Singers’ Society, and is also Musical Director of Hallam Choral Society. He is in demand for the delivery of workshops on vocal technique for choirs and other organisations.
Peter is also a principal member of the newly formed Sheffield Chamber Choir: A small group of singers dedicated to performing liturgical choral music to the highest possible standard. SCC perform in concert for charities and are often called upon to provide choral music for special occasion church services where no choir is available.
Peter has been teaching singing for over decade and over that time has worked to ensure he is constantly informed of new developments in the field. To that end, he has attended numerous courses in the Estill Model with the world renowned Anne-Marie Speed and Paul Farrington, and is developing a specialism in teaching through an understanding of vocal physiology. He strongly believes that a good singer is one who knows what he or she is doing to produce the sound they want and, most importantly, can do so consistently and safely. He is happy to teach in all genres of music, from Opera to Musical Theatre, and from Pop to heavy rock styles: Good technique is necessary in all genres if a singer is to keep their voice healthy.
Peter has until recently been a singing teacher on the Trinity College of Music Professional Musical Theatre Diploma course at SLP College, Leeds, where he prepared young singers for a career in Musical Theatre. Past students are currently appearing in the West End and in touring productions including We Will Rock You and Legally Blonde. He has recently decided to focus all of his teaching in Sheffield: at Birkdale School and for The Milsom School of Music.
